Hey guys!

So, not great news, I didn't get the job at Nickelodeon. This means I have a few things to figure out pretty quick, here. On top of this, I'm pretty burned out when it comes to writing and drawing Those Unknowable. I want to keep making it but I don't want to make it when I'm exhausted, so I was hoping you guys might be okay with me taking a break after this chapter ends?

I made a strawpoll to figure out what would be okay with you all. Personally I'd like to take a 3 week, but if that's too long for you guys I'll understand. Please vote on the poll here so you can tell me what to do without outing yourself :D

I love the comic but I also know that feeling of being totally burned out with a project. My vote is take what time you need to recover. I've also been in the position of missing out on a job that I was really invested in applying for. In my case I was lucky. A., I wasn't really ready for the task and B., I missed out on a huge legal and ethical disaster that was still having consequences when I did get the position three years later. The point is you may find yourself grateful later on and if you keep your eyes open opportunities will present themselves.

Haha, that's a good point! I probably just wasn't ready for it, or I'm just not right for the job. I'd really like to get there at some point, I'll just try different methods. I really appreciate you understanding, though I'm not surprised to see it from you :)

For some reason pipes always make backgrounds better.

When in doubt, add more pipes.

Also, damn that scar is gnarly.

I love pipes. I wish I could draw more pipes. Maybe they'll go to the pipe dimension :D

Oh yeah, man, mustard gas ain't no joke.

Wow, nice touch with that. I hadn't thought about it in a while but HPL referenced the effect of the Great War on several of his characters. I wonder if he passed through Herbert West's field hospital?

Also, if you feel the need to take a break, then absolutely take it. I've taken breaks and I've always come back eager to keep going.

There's nothing worse than feeling guilty about not doing a page when, well, life requires your attention.

Do what you need. Don't feel bad. We'll be here when you get back.

Let me know if you want filler art.

Aah, man, you rock. That's exactly what I'm hoping for, because I definitely do NOT want to do substandard art.

In terms of filler art, that might be fun, actually! Why don't you PM me some commission prices and we'll work something out? :D

The Big Two are often late with entire books...

without apologizing, and with FAR less excuse than an indie artist giving us comics for free! As long as you give us occasional updates (don't just ghost us please!) I don't see that we have any grounds for complaint. Also perhaps promote your Patreon more? That's been a big help to many webcomic artists financially. And perhaps compiling the "issues" into pdfs to sell on Gumroad? Just a thought, but that way you could make some money off your art that already exists, without too much additional prep work.

I suppose that's true. I should harp on my Patreon some more but I need to catch up on my delivery there, too. You reminded me I need to select my two random drawing request patrons :D

But yeah, I've been looking into other ways to monetize, like Amazon etc. There's also the possibility of a Kickstarter for a graphic novel version on the horizon :) I'll let you guys know when I have more.

Ninja seems to be a bit lower, actually! I'm certainly looking into it though. I think through Ninja I could get 1200 books for about 3000 dollars, or in that ballpark.

I voted for the 3 weeks option, but only because that was your specified duration, otherwise I would have voted the indefinite option. Take a break, recoup and relax, and come back when you can, refreshed and ready to continue the story. We'll be here waiting for more. :)

I really appreciate it, you guys are the greatest. I don't want to sit on it too long, I just need a break, need a chance to collect my thoughts and arrange some stuff in meat space, then I should be more than ready to continue.

That is a very awkward invitation but I guess they need all the allies.
I take it back. It does look pretty spooky and like a usual occult meeting place but at least not on the outside :D
I wonder how familiar are these guys with the monsters because that guy looks like someone who had a run-in with a few of them in the past...

Aw man, I am in exactly the same place as you are re: everything! Nothing crummier than being turned down for a job you really want. Hiring managers are so good at making you feel inadequate even if you KNOW you're awesome. Let's take a break together, yeah? (Except I've already been taking a break for 2 weeks but screw it, I'mma STARVE dat readership)

Love ya buddy, hope things look up soon!

I'm sorry you're going through it too :/ I hope we both get into the work we're looking for soon.

I agree though, taking a break is good, lest you end up making a bunch of crappy material that you're not in love with - readers can sense that stuff, you can't BS your way through it, and I don't want to do that ANYWAY, so I'm not gonna :)

Love you too, let's get out of this muck!

Bah. Bah, I say! I've never been one to subscribe to the idea of the "Suffering Artist". To me, the health and well-being of the artist makes for better art, and most likely more prolific art, in the long run.

You take your break, and take it well. Sorry you didn't get the job, but hopefully that just means there are better things out there for you.

Hah! Yeah, uh, when I'm really suffering my sequential art takes a nosedive. Maybe some vent art would be okay, but I'm not sure this comic could run on purely vent art, heh :)

But thank you, I think I'm gonna go with the 3 week plan, probably :)

...oh dear :D

I did NOT get the job at Nickelodeon, sadly, so I have to pursue other job avenues. Currently trying to find a decently paying job and a place to move into in my home town.

Hopefully I'll have work in the industry in the future, though :)

On one hand, how selfish does one have to be to demand unyielding, perpetual servitude from an artist/author combo creating a largely unpaid, unprinted webcomic?

On the other, I still remember bitterly watching too many beloved webcomics go on hiatus, lapse into perpetual hiatus, and ultimately dissolve. Perhaps that’s just the nature of the genre, but for me, one of the absolute worst instances of this was actually Lovecraftian themed. Shadowgirls, I’ll always miss you.

But back on the other hand, I realize I’ve been largely spoiled lately. The creators of many of the webcomics I follow are clearly terminators, and Skynet’s decided to drop war in favor of the humanities. “Yeah, my car broke down, I caught my co-worker’s cold, and I got mauled by a radioactive bear over the weekend. They’re keeping me for observation incase I develop any ursine related super powers… or rabies. Sorry today’s issue isn’t colored, but I should have it done by Wednesday.”

Ultimately, burn out can do as much damage to a project as anything. Take the time you need, get your affairs in order, and don’t strain the comic out. It will only suffer alongside you.

I promise that it's just a break, I'm not entering the deadly H word. I've been doing this for 3 years now, that's too much of a time investment for me to drop it - I've not had an extended break yet so I think it's a smart idea :)

I know the kind of creators you're talking about though. Some people put themselves through a lot to get pages out - while I've faced adversity and definitely made some sacrifices to keep working on this project, ultimately I've been pretty fortunate. Thanks for being one of my many amazing readers :)

Take as long as you need and if you find that you need more, take more - under one condition: Please tell us how long you want to keep away and that you're still alive once the announced time is up. That is all I ask :)

(Sorry for being so late, had a surgery, very successful.)

I'm glad your surgery went well! :)

Thank you so much for understanding, I don't anticipate anything longer than 3 weeks, but I will STILL be posting on this page so you will absolutely know where I'm at in my process and you will know when I have "returned", so to speak :)

You guys rock.
