Back to safety! As safe as sitting in a room with Nyarlathotep can be, anyway.

I'm attending a local artist event at our local comic shop tomorrow, hopefully I'll be able to spread the word a bit and make some sales :)

Have a good weekend!

So, will they bring in a specialist?

We don't see that much of it yet, but the hospital interior reminds me of the hospital from "Dr Phibes Rises Again".

Oh it's the same place that Hugh and the gang are usually hanging out :D It's a special ward with some very cozy living accommodations, and just enough entertainment to maybe not die of boredom.

I haven't seen Dr. Phibes in a long while, I'll need to check that out again!

Oops, wrong Dr Phibes movie. The scene is from the Abominable Dr Phibes. The hospital where Dr Phibes visits his gooey wrath on the nurse is done in shades of green with lots of art deco touches.

Ohh, gotcha! I didn't realize there were more Dr. Phibes movies, I feel so bad XD I mostly remember Vincent Price from the scooby doo reruns that used to play on cartoon network, sacrilegious as that is.

He seems to be doing alright with four large bulletholes in him. Just get someone to make 'em a little larger, and fish that offender out!

Or, y'know, actual surgery. Whatever works.

Hmm, shouldn't the "later" note be on the first panel? Otherwise the first panel is some other, unconnected coffee conversation, and then shoop! we're later, chatting with Nyarlatohep.

Nyar is surprisingly sympathetic here, honestly. Though I have a sense that Jaunt's about to be told that there will be no rest for him. He looks pretty spry for four bulletholes and bloodloss, though. He can rub some dirt on it, surely, and move on? :P

I'm actually going for a cinematic effect here where it "smash cuts" to a new scene with an intense close-up, then pulls out to show the establishing shot with context.

I'm not sure what the name of the technique is called but I'm sure one of my LA friends could tell me :')

But yeah, Nyarlathotep is apparently not feeling particularly wrathy at the moment, but why is that, hmm..?

Obviously, that hospital has *really good* coffee. Like, the kind of coffee that convinces the doctors and nurses that they're not really seeing a naked insectoid critter with a monocle in their break area.

Nyarlatohep came for the injury, but is staying for the loco beans. *nods*

I figure they've been told not to come to the breakroom ;)

The staff are used to seeing people turning into fish, but I dunno about the rest of it...

Well, my first thought was the same, that the "later" was misplaced - immediately forgiven because the scene is so calm (still with always-present threat that Nyarl poses), almost... "homely". So maybe it's good that there is a little "disturbance" initially.

Anyway, this "smash cut" IMHO works best when there is a change/switch to another location at about the same time. Since Jaunt is in the scene, the "later" is obvious/implied, so it could be omitted, unless you want to tell that this is at a specific time, e.g. "Innsmouth General - Special Ward, 22 minutes later"...

Ahem. If some detail catches my special attention, I tend to over-analyze the thing... sorry. (On the other hand, doing this is rather satisfying, and telling the "result" even more so... so yeah: Sorry - but I had fun ;P)

Yeah, I can see that. I wanted to convey that some time had passed, I also used the almost empty coffee cup to imply this, heh.

One of my less successful transitions, then. Lesson learned :) I appreciate the commentary and the input, for sure!

It is hard to tell, really, but I am beginning to think even Nyarl might be in the dark about what it is going on. Ya, Thigg clearly has something against Jaunt specifically or at least his race. Hm. I think it is someone even higher on the list.

Nyarlathotep is not an all-seer like Yog is, so he does need to observe things to understand. It helps that he has a thousand forms spread around the world, but still :)

It would appear he wasn't prepared for this event, though!

I really like that Jaunt is enjoying a nice hot drink here. He loves human food!
Also I'm realizing that everyone in this freaking comic needs a good nap.

I love how calm and formal Jaunt is in this scene. I felt like I could hear his voice. And it's been neat seeing how he behaves with his superior.

He feels a bit safer, now. And now that he knows that Jack has made some progress he's felt a bit of relief, too. He's not about to make the mistake of getting informal or heated with Nyarlathotep again :)

I wonder if Nyarlahotep is able openly use the special ward room or if he just manifests himself inside of it.

I suppose I could also ask if Jaunt can openly come and go from the hospital.

How deep does the conspiracy go?

By the way, an online friend has just recommended an Innsmouth mystery novel to me. It is Winter Tide, the first book in The Innsmouth Legacy by Ruthanna Emrys.

It is not a horror novel per se, but rather a mystery/spy novel about two human Deep Ones, siblings, who survived the 1928 destruction of Innsmouth as children. They were sent with other survivors to internment camps in the desert southwest.

In the 1950s they now work for an FBI agent on investigations needing their special capabilities. They have not transitioned into full-fledged Deep Ones yet, but they do have the "Innsmouth Look". Their current assignment is investigating a KGB plot to steal rare books from Miskatonic University. My friend highly recommends the book, but I think that I will wait until it comes out in paperback early next year.

He's likely just manifesting there - the hospital staff is not likely to know about Jaunt, much less Nyarl, so their presence is being kept secret for the time being.

I don't think it would be too much of a stretch to accept that some other kind of alien being would exist if you tend to half-men half-fish regularly, hm?

That book does sound interesting, though! I'll have to see if it's in audiobook form since that's usually how I take in books anymore. It allows me to do other things while I listen :)

Since Yog-sothoth pretty much knows everything that has happened. is happening, and will happen, it makes me wonder if he placed Jaunt where he is just because he himself is an important piece of his strategy to reach his unknowable goal, or if it's this interaction between him and Thigg/Irwinn that is the step towards his goal and that's the limit of his plans for Jaunt (which then would be discarded. These beings aren't known for human morals.)

Omniscience makes my head hurt.

Well the thing is that Yog already knows what is going to happen but it also knows that the reason why it knows what's going to happen is because it recruited Jaunt to find out what's going to happen, so Yog made sure to recruit him so it could find out the thing that it already knows :)

Simple!
