Back into Sepiaville :D This is a lot of fun, actually, I want to do more comics like this - fun fact, the first comic I worked on was a black and white (and greys) comic! Maybe this is just something that calls to me?

Anyway, let's all sit down for Uncle Chase's story hour :D

Looking at how the windo is smashed from inside I'm thinking Walton was a werewolf or deep one hybrid.

Only one way to tell, is to look at his hair.

If it's perfect, then werewolf.

A solid early guess from Tom :D

@Twilight: What if they have like, Hugh Jackman hair? Is that messy perfect? Or is it messy perfect enough to not be perfect?

"The longer I was there, the more that didn't sit right with me..."
I guess McAllister's thought process here would be that in case of a bear, a war veteran's first instinct would have been to grab his weapon, which is apparently not something he did?

That is some WIDE spacing on those marks in the second-to-last panel. Hope it's not claws. Also noticed the window was broken (at least partially) outwards.

I may have exaggerated the spacing a bit much, haha... or did I!?

I've actually been putting a magnifying glass to my scale, recently, because I'm noticing more and more errors with it. Thank you for keeping me on my toes :)

What if someone broke the window from outside and threw the pieces back out? :O
Nobody thinks of that I guess...

Nah. Dude had an inner monster probably. The cans of food kind of give it away and no sign of struggle as the weapons and all are in place.

All these guesses to what could be going on :D You know my policy on speculation, but I wonder if someone who was living the experience in the comic rather than reading it would come to a conclusion like that... :)

Another amazing page. I'm still here in the shadows (pun intended) reading, just too shy and busy to leave comments. Here's a recap of some of my thoughts since my last comment.

- I'm waiting for Clara to get into immediate trouble on the Campus.
- Jaunt's new/secondary outfit is nice.
- Who doesn't love seeing Jack getting ready for the next confrontation.
- Artwork, especially the environments are amazing and detailed. I know how much work goes into it, so I make sure I take time to look at the details while reading.
- Lots going on, things are building up. Keep up the great work.

Hey thanks, man - I was actually thinking about you just today, how strange you would pop up in my comments section :) I hope you're doing well!

I appreciate your compliments and speculation, though to remark on your backgrounds comment, man, you definitely know how much work goes into making them because you are incredible at them. Any time I look at NR's backgrounds I'm like "How do you have the patience to do this, what the crap", heh. I'm ALWAYS looking for shortcuts... though I try not to sacrifice TOO much quality when I do so.

I'm glad someone appreciates them, in the end :)

Yeah, there's a lot of odd things here. Perhaps most important? The lack of blood. And perhaps more telling, the lack of a body. The gun is in a place easy to access, but clearly was not used. Perhaps most importantly, those claw marks are all over the place: A bear wouldn't just claw up the place randomly... but maybe a human transforming into something other than human would, especially if he didn't understand what was happening to him.

There are some stains in panel 2. 'Cause of the sepia tone it's unclear, but I'd call it blood until proven otherwise.
What jumped out to me first was that all the slash marks have 3 claws. It's a strange number for most animals that commonly are associated with lycanthrope transformations. I agree that transformation is the most likely theory, but it's not the only one.

Who said anything about lycanthropes? With claw marks, the thumb leaves no scratch, and the folk who've gone "Deep" shed a finger, leaving three fingers and a thumb. Not everyone who descended from Innsmouth would know they were from Innsmouth stock... at least, not until they reached a certain age.

My bad.

Oh, whoops. I'm sorry That Guy. I mis-read your post and went off on a tangent.
I do believe you will be correct in the end, since I've also noticed the Deep Ones missing fingers in the past. But I'd also point out that in the page below, not all of the main "fish crew" lost a finger. Barry and Al still have all 4.

That wall of war souvenirs is interesting. I am assuming that the German "potato masher" grenades are deactivated. Otherwise, we might be looking at a "Chekov's Gun" situation in Act Three. Speaking of guns, the way that the bayonet is tied to the rifle is very intriguing.

Haha, yeah - in my head the grenades were duds the guy collected, otherwise why would I show them unless they were gonna be used later? Heheh.

As far as the gun goes, I figure the actual attachment for the bayonet was broken in combat and it ended up being secured with medical tape or some such - that's what I was thinking, whether I was successful or not, well.. that's up to my readers :)

Hmmm, using Murphy for scale, those are some big claws. I know they are a lot of work but those small details like the path down to the water that make it work for me. Does the story take place in an alternate universe that is almost but not quite a copy of ours? The details are internally consistent but just a little different from our own.

It's not so alternate, I guess - it's basically our own but with room for otherwordly terrors that I personally hope are not in our reality :D

It's more like the general course of history is the same, just some of the details may be different.

I'm personally doubtful of the werewolf theory, and not just because we don't really see them in Lovecraft's work. A werewolf is usually a recurring transformation, happening for three nights out of every twenty-eight. If he was prone to these transformations, we'd see less in the way of claw marks, and more in the way of a basement with chains to keep him from hurting others while in "beast mode". This wouldn't catch him by surprise like this one seemed to, or have lasted long enough for him to raid the pantry, or left him with enough sense to know that the pantry was someplace that he COULD raid. That isn't to say that there might be something other than Deep Ones out there, individuals who remain human in appearance until they reach a certain age, and take on a beastial form later in life. Maybe there could be a group of "Feral Ones" that rove the land, as opposed to the Deep Ones who rule the waves. Or maybe the fellow was more like Wilbur Whateley from the Dunwich Horror, a child of Yog-Sothoth, only he didn't start showing it anywhere near as quickly as either of the Whateley boys did.

That premise has been touched on, notably by Philip Jose Farmer but I think the idea of unknowing spawn of a Lovecraftian entity still has a lot of story teling left in it.

Speculating is part of the fun. Kind of like trying to guess what is in the present. Take it as a sign that the story has us hooked.
